Classical interpretation comp
LIQUID LIQUID is offline 11-01-2010, 09:46 AM

Pete (GravitySlip) and I were chatting about the idea of a comp where we all do our own interpretation of the same piece. Perhaps Mr Amadeus could select a classical piece and get commitment from enough of us to take part then off we go. Wouldnt it be fascinating to see how different artists aproach the same piece.

We have had some great examples lately so the bar is set high but it could be good fun.

Any takers?

It would have to be reasonably short (<6m) I reckon, and not TOO ridiculously difficult. Moussorghsky's Pictures At An Exhibition anyone? No, leave that to t*ssers like Keith Emerson... (Feeling provocative today)

Strauss, Blue Danube?

Extracts from the Four Seasons (no, not Frankie Valli!)?

You could also look at doing a particular section from a longer piece. The key being 'interpretation', so you could choose to do a 3 or 4 minute track based off a 20 minute piece. I think this would be a cool idea, I've had a few pieces banging around my head for years that I would love to attempt. This would be a great opportunity to give something a go.

End of the day it would be the artist who decided but assuming we chose Fur Elise it wouldnt be effective if the artist chose to reproduce a part of the music that didnt include the popular elements of the piece that most people would recognise.

Do you propose we agree on a single piece and everyone does their own interpretation? Or would we leave it open to everyone to choose their own 'classical' piece that they can do their own interpretation of?
I think if everyone had their own choice of track it would make the comp more accessible seeing as everyone has different tastes etc.

The proposal was too select the same piece the idea being the outcome would be different based on individual styles so we would be judging them on artistic interpretation not just musical prowess as were not all as accomplished as each other technically.

I guess we could suggest tracks and you could be the one to choose the nominated track for us to interpret Mr A

I think A is right - one piece would be too restrictive

Maybe instead of selecting just one piece, maybe we could have a choice of five or so?

I don't think the level of difficulty would really make a difference on how one track would stand up to another. My personal experience playing the fast stuff is that people tend to prefer the slower stuff anyway
I think it would be very hard to pick a single piece that would keep everyone motivated. It would be very cool to hear all of the variations we could come up with moderns instruments on a classical piece though... Honestly I would join in regardless of whether it was a choose your own piece comp or everyone doing the same one (but I would prefer to do my own one!).
How about everyone throwing in a few suggested classical pieces and if a few people decide to go for the same track then fair enough? I'm easy either way, what say the rest of ye?
