Video Game tuneage Comp
LIQUID LIQUID is offline 11-08-2011, 20:58 PM

Ok so I asked for a comp and seems I`m the Man to pull it together so lets start with inputs from those in the know as to what a comp like this should be trying to achieve.

Even though I occasionally play video games I admit to not paying to much attention to the tunage so I expect we need to agree on a few things before we kick off.

I suggest that potentially any piece of music could be used in a video game as the genre is so varied so first thing to agree is genre.

How about:-

Nintendo Wii Shoot em up/Arcade kind of thing?
Original tuneage only no samples from existing tracks!
Under 2 mins!
Vocals additions are fine but again only originals

once I have some words of wisdom from the better informed amongst you I`ll pull it together into one cohesive requirement specification

Pobably be best haveing 2 types of games, one for a score (Call Of Duty, Final Fantasy,Resident evil) and another for a more adrenaline type game (Arcade racing Shoot em up, etc etc). Just a suggestion.

You could link a game moment from YouTube chosen with a pin, tell everyone to mute the volume and compose some music for it right there. That would give a level playing field right from the off, a clear brief to ones own personal ideas pretty much as I expect games developers present silent games to musicians - instant material, no need to invent a game. The more obscure game the better I imagine. This is a compo, don't make it easy

I've been playing computer games since 1982 and I've never heard any vocals in any of them.

Cracking Idea Dave - Would you use your cunning knowhow to selct a clip from a game? As with all Comps the bit where we generally disagree is the judging so if were all starting from the same datum then that should make it easier.

I can do that yes, and to cunningly avoid the most obvious of interpretations right from the word go so it makes people have to think... oh no, I can't do a heavy metal solo to this!!!

Cheers Dave sounds like the beginnings of something - Perhaps you could select more than one giving people options to match their style with the scene as per Marty's advice? = something moody and something arcade style shooty

Sure, got two in mind already a colourful pacey arcade puzzle game and a darker enemy confrontation scene, both from titles that didn't sell too well so there should be no one here that has played them. As long as it doesn't start getting too complicated in the rules department and this one really is for fun and a screen badge. I'm thinking it might be wise to run it by the game copyright holders as well just so we don't get any funny business or strutting, I'm sure they won't mind and they might even judge it or give the winners a future contract.... cough, cough, getting a little ahead of ourselves there

Opinions so far people - This going the way you expected and are happy with?

Rules sound simple for this one:-

I`m thinking along the lines of...

Original tuneage only - no remixes
spot samples/loops only, no big extracts from existing tracks
Duration to finish or fade by the end of the clip
One entry per member per vid extract
...plus all the usual stuff that Big A will add about copyright infringement etc

Any thoughts on how we Judge this one? - Members poll or Invite someone independant to Judge? - Perhaps GreyB if He aint entering as He is the most grown up of all of us

How about track hosting? Will everyone keep their tracks on their own artist pages to pimp or will I set up an artist page specifically for the comp? Personally, I think it will work better off individual artist pages. Rates can be counted from there and proper credit can go to the artist for anything that charts.
