So what about parodies? I.E. Weird Al Yankovic? Not sure I have the talent but it seems this would fall under the "pay tribute to" part of the contest. I would love to give it a try, and my understanding is that it is not illegal to do parodies of any given work of art under that interpretation. Or is that just the U.S.? Or does it not apply? Does anyone give-o-shat
I'm a big fan of opening can-o-worms.....

That is a very good point, Dan, and parodies are a kind of tribute in a way. It is also interesting that parodies fall under a kind of loophole in copyright law. Under the "fair use" provision of U.S. copyright law, affirmed by the United States Supreme Court, one does not need permission to record a parody.
However, it is still illegal to use samples of pre-recorded music from the original song in a parody, as they are protected by copyright, so the parodist needs to re-record their own 'cover version' of the music they intend to parody, which is what Weird Al Yankovic does for every song. And taking Weird Al as a case in point, even though he isn't required to by law, he famously always requests permission from the artist before releasing any parody, in order to maintain good relationships within the music community. Rather than opening a can of worms, I think you have made a fine suggestion for a future comp and one we will look into legal-wise. But for this comp let's put parodies aside. When it comes to judgement, let's go the way of the Golden Globes or BAFTAs and keep drama and comedy accolades separate. Let's not go the way of the Oscars (where Comedies very rarely win anyway...) Cool with you? Thanks again for the great suggestion.

Hmmmm.... - I have been really busy recently so I'm not dead yet and also my music just sounds old and decrepid but is in fact much more recent. I'll have to pop round and see my mate Ludwig and get him to post something on here as well - cos he's also a bit upset about recent plagiurism of his classic works.. Hey Ludwig wake up...... ! - jon

Whereupon shall we post said 'permission' tracks? Shall we upload 'em to our artiste pages, and then take it/them from there?
