Cubase 5: Anyone use it? Is it Good?
TonyMiller TonyMiller is offline 18-07-2010, 20:52 PM

The thread title says it all... Is it worth me saving me pennies for Cubase 5? Or should I stick to me ancient SX 2?

Hey T-Bone, are you running a 64bit system with that? I have a quad core custom made beast of a machine with 8GB's of RAM but SX3 stutters and stumbles along especially if more than one vst is open. I would gladly make the upgrade to Cubase5 if this will solve the problem.

I tried it on a 64bit OS but found that it stutters but not as much. The problem is, Dave, that almost all vst's are still only in 32bit which is why a DAW running in 64 bit stutters. Only way to stop that is to have cubase installed in 32 bit mode, which really defeats the purpose of running 64 bit.
There are some downloadable "wrappers" which claim to make it all run properly but I think they tend towards being too CPU heavy which, if you're required to use it on a lot of VST's, again defeats the purpose of running a 64 bit DAW.
Basically the DAW manufacturers are way ahead of the VST manufacturers and until they catch up we're left with heavy-on-the-cpu wrappers, or 32 bit DAWs, unless you just use the onboard VSTs with the DAW.

Very happy with Cubase 5, although Presonus Studio one is also something worth looking into because of the AMAZING workflow is has!

Alan (Geiger): I now find that SX 2.1 is a bit flaky with new VSTs and VSTis and its control of memory is poor. If you leave it running for a few hours without doing anything, it tends to go tits up. So I may look around for a cheap copy of 4 and move to that. Thanks for the words everyone.

I got Cubase 5 after using SL3 for years. Its a great bit of kit. One of the things that I love on it is the expressions map. I can add lots of articulations to it. For instance, If I have a violin line I can make it sound like a real player playing the note upbow or downbow. I can add accents, play softly, all kinds of stuff.
