we used cubase sx 3 for along time and then last year decided it was outdated - so we moved to ableton, which is amazing. it takes some time to change the way you work fromt he cubase way, but everything is done much better. now we havent tried cubase 5 so cant comment, but basically what im saying is dont just look at cubase when deciding where to go next software wise, also have a look at ableton

Tony,
I'm on cubase 4 and it's phenominal compared to SX - loads more soft synths that I've only just scratched the surface on - it'll suit your milltronica stuff for sure. Dunno if Hank'd approve tho!!! C5 is an upgraded version of C4 but i don't reckon it's the significant quantum leap that 4 was over sx. I'll die hugging cubase and mr. steinberg. Does that make me gay? Andy

A better question would be what are you hoping an update will do for you. Are you unhappy with your mixes, plugins, effects etc on what you have ? Your mixes are pretty pro sounding now, is there an aspect you are unhappy with or is the sound palette of your cubase feeling a bit outdated now ? You may better of with a new sampler like Kontakt, or better still, Komplete (which includes Kontakt and many more instruments) You then have the advantage of some new sounds (reaktor, kontakt, fm8, massive, abysnth etc) and effects (guitar rig 4, reaktor fx etc) and drums (battery, and the drum machines in reaktor) Personally I'm of the view 'it it aint broke don't fix it' and unless you are specifically unhappy with something why change ?

That sounds like a plan... having said that, reviews I have read for Cubase 5 lead me to believe the editing and mixing tools are much improved. I think I'll keep the money I haven't got and wait a while...
Thanks folks. And thanks Mr. Geiger for the kind word on my mixes so far...

I have only done a few projects so far and they have all been reason 4 rewired into C5 with all the signal processing in C5. I can't see what advantage C5 would offer for someone who mixes live tracks like rock etc because everything can prob be done in SX2 just as good. If however you want a much improved Cubase which is easier to use and has all those little features that you currently have to work around, then as long as it is affordable you should go for it, I can't see how anyone can regret owning C5. Again though, if it is just to record guitars and drums etc to mix them down then SX2 is equal to this task. I can honestly say that I haven't used one of the plugins that came with it.

I use Cubase 5 and find it to be a remarkably pleasant piece of software. Very similar to SX3 but there's tonnes more on it and I find it quicker, lighter on the CPU and has a better layout once you get used to it.
Well worth saving the pennies for it. T-Bone
