Cubase - question about midi sequencing
Superhuman Superhuman is offline 21-07-2010, 12:36 PM

I have a couple of cool VST's that I would love to get stuck into but have been unable to use properly due to inexperience with midi. The package I am most interested and most stuck on is EastWest Samples 'Symphonic Orchestra Silver Edition', it basically a huge library with multiple samples for each note of each instrument within an orchestra. Very cool.

My problem is as follows - say I want to create a passage using a the entire violin section of an orchestra. There are around 4 different basic types of strokes at play during the melody - up strokes with fast attack, down stroke with fast attack, up with less attack and a touch of vibrato and down with the same (additional sample types included would be pizacatto, tremelo, plucking etc). I can just about get through writing the music through the piano editor (reverse engineering melodies from my guitar - painstaking!) but how do I deal with all of these different note types in Cubase? I'm really hoping I don't have to do the following:
1) Write the phrase or passage on a single scratch track
2) Set up multiple tracks and load each of them up with the VST for the various stroke types in the passage
3) Individually move each note from the scratch track to the track that corresponds with the stroke type (up, down etc)

If the above is the only way to do this how do I add slurs between stroke types? How do I stitch all of the tracks together to sound natural??

What I hope someone can do is tell me how to do the following:
Write the passage on a single master track for that melody, upload the various VST's to separate tracks as per normal BUT then somehow be able to assign those VST's to individual notes on the master track. Ideally, you could make up strokes purple notes, down strokes blue notes, tremelo yellow etc. then all you have to do is write the passage and change the colour of the notes.

Is this possible? Am I going about this all wrong?

As it is my creativity is being murdered by technology and a vertical learning curve I've got hundreds of guitar riffs and pieces that I want to put to classical sounds with electro beats... please help!!!

I'd definitely be interested in the Answer. Reckon Andy Foyston will know cos he uses East West stuff but prob not in cubase.

One thing to try looking for in the midi track for the EW vst loaded into cubase is the midi control settings - as far as i remember there are 127 settings for each midi track that define track loudness, vibrato and loads of other stuff. I know for each of the 127 settings you can allocate it to a "support" track so that, for instance you can gradually bring in vibrato then take it away BUT it affects all notes on that midi track.

Outta my league now. Good look and pls share the answers.

Andy

I don't use cubase or East West vst but I'm thinking they may all work the same. I use Miroslav Philharmonic for my orchestrations. Each sound ie; violin, cello, brass all have individual sound types...ie; violin - long play, stacatt, pizicatto, trem, etc. Unfortunately you do have to use individual midi tracks to obtain the different attacks, sustains etc. for each instrument. It is a bit tedious but the end result is worth the effort IMO.
After that it's just a matter of getting your velocity levels where you want them and record onto one audio track or how ever many you choose to use. I'm not sure if any plugin will allow you to use multiple sound types on one track. Correct me if I'm wrong someone pls!

I don't use either,so I don't know, but agree with Rich once it's all setup seperately it's easier to isolate an offending sample and give it a good seeing to

I may be stating something really obvious here, but dont all the big sampler librarys mentioned use keystrokes (usually switches at a very low or high octave on the midi keyboard) which when pressed change the articulations of the orchestral instruments to different types. So, example, as you would play a melody line with your right hand you use the left hand to press the keys on the lower keyboard to operate the keyswitches, or simply add the notes on your piano roll in the sequencer to use these articulations) I mainly use the Kontakt sampler (from native instruments) which uses keyswitches a lot) and I use them on everything from bass, guitar, and orchestral samples to get a bit of human feel into the passages and my keyboard is only a four octave affair so I usually end up adding the keyswitches manually on the piano roll, to say change from a legato style, to a pizzicato sytle and usually the mod wheel is use for adding sustainm, cresc, and vibrato to the sounds etc. I know East West use keyswitches a lot, it really isn't that hard to use your left hand to press some keys to change articulations live if you have a say a decent size midi keyboard, or even add some dummy notes on a piano roll just to change the sounds. Just to clarify the keyswitches dont produce a sound, they are simply switches set on your midi keyboard to change the articulations of your chosen sound
