Different Approaches to Trance Production
Steven Silverthorn Steven Silverthorn is offline 23-11-2010, 03:46 AM

I came across this vid on YT -

YouTube - LiveDjFlo Deliver our souls from evil - Trance LIVE on Synthesizer 2009

I was thinking that writing in front of a computer screen and keyboard is not always ideal - in the past I have written Trance from a chord perspective, rather than it being guided by melody from the get go - I now think that is what Matt has recognised as dogging my style - and he is spot on I think -

I will try writing more as a keyboard player, with melodies being the MOST important factor - arranging in Logic or Live - should be interesting, given the over all structure will be there - dictated by feeling huh?

Here is DJFlo with a piano version of Airbase -Genie!

Hi Steven

Ahhh, a very interesting subject and wow @ DJFlo, amazing stuff, I've just been watching his other videos too.

Most of the time when it comes to my attempts at Trance I sit at my puter. I always have pads so I work out a chord progression first and the melodies after. Sometimes the melodies follow the progression and I then work out what chords (for the pads) I can stay on as the melody develops, so everthing is not playing the same thing all of the time. I work at this on my midi keyboard, taking a lot of time, to see where I can take it, develop it and make it more interesting. I also try and wok out a counter melody that is made up of notes from the Chord Scale. Not just arpeggiating the route 3rd and 5th, although I have done that on some tracks in the past.

For my bass I simply open my midi chord progression file and find the common notes that fit with the progression. So in places the bass note can hold on a "C" for instance and the pads change. Or I alternate between the route, third and fifth, to give it a bit of interest.

When away from my puter I might get a melody in my head and hum it into my mp3 player. I currently have 24 of these "humming" files on my player. So I hope to get around to them eventually.

Well, thats the way I do things. I hope someone esle can contribute to tihs thread. A very interesting subject.

LOL....................For my bass I simply delve into 8GB of bassline loops/samples...........simples.
