The Irish Rover - definitive Punk version (maybe?)
Snidcyco Snidcyco is offline 04-06-2010, 20:30 PM

After being asked to perform a couple of traditional Irish songs on acoustic guitar at a recent Saint Patrick's Day event in Tokyo (big event every year by the way - annual parade in Harajuku's main street Omote Sando), this classic song bit me and the bug wouldn't let go until until I recorded a full version of it meself with all instruments (save fiddle alas, which I cannot play, and I imagine would probably sound shite if synthesized).

Anyway, I realise that this will be, for some, quite a well-known song, and that it's inclusion on MP3U might seem dodgy since it is supposed to promote original songs, not covers of copyrighted tracks, right?

However... this is a traditional Irish song - popularised for sure by The Pogues and The Dubliners, and so on - but nevertheless a traditional song and very much in the public domain (along with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven et al).

I love the Pogues and Dubliners version, but there seems to be a couple of extra verses in it which aren't present in any other well-known version, so in the interests of copyright issue avoidance I've left them out and went with a strictly traditional version, lyrically speaking.

Musically though, I wasn't sure how to categorize it... I think this version sounds a bit more Punk than my older versions (maybe).

Left some thoughts on the song. I like the song. Just needs some work. That's all.

Thanks for the comments Andy, much appreciated. I agree it still needs a lot of work.

By the way, I meant "definitive Punk version" out of my own versions of the song (it has been re-uploaded a few times), not an overblown "definitive Punk version in the world!" type statement. Is it possible to edit the title of a thread?

Tony Miller had some suggestions about the overly simple drums in an earlier incarnation of the song - have you heard the new drums yet, Tony?

Finally got around to working on the song a bit more. Have given the guitars more oomph as per Andy's suggestions. Please comment and rate if ya liked. Cheers!

January 2012 update: Never managed to find a fiddler, so added some fiddley bits myself (alas, with synths...) Reckon this might be the final version.

I agree with you Naughty Step. The digital 'fiddley part' sounded a bit sterile, so I recorded over it with live electric guitars for more raw sound.

The Irish Rover

Also uploaded a video for the song to youtube

@Mart:

LOL Homesick? Not really (maybe a smidgen...). The countryside of Ireland is beautiful, but I'm from the Dirty Old Town, Dublin, which is conspicuously absent from the vid...

By the way, good141's comment is almost exactly the same as Andy's. Hmmm...
